Walk through access before the start date
Identify driveways, narrow paths, locked gates and any areas that must remain available to occupants. Tell the painter about delivery times, school routines or shared access. Access equipment needs its own assessment; homeowners should not improvise platforms or arrange removal of fittings without discussing the work first.
Allocate moving and protection responsibilities
List outdoor furniture, pot plants, wall-mounted items and vehicles near the work. Confirm who moves or protects each item and when it can be returned. Discuss delicate planting and adjoining finishes. Do not assume the painting scope includes disconnecting electrical fixtures, removing services or relocating heavy equipment.
Agree a practical daily handover
Ask how tools, materials and work areas will be left between visits and which routes will stay usable. Keep children and pets away from active work areas. Confirm how weather-related changes will be communicated and which items must remain clear until coatings are ready for normal contact. Agree where materials can be stored without blocking the household's normal entry and exit.
