Two weatherboard exteriors can look similar from the street yet require very different work. One may have a sound existing finish, while the other has unstable coatings, difficult access or timber that needs further assessment. A useful quote explains those differences before the project begins.

What should be checked before quoting?

Walk around the building with the painter and identify weatherboards, gables, eaves, fascia, windows and other details separately. Point out previous repairs, recurring marks and any known water entry. Ask which surfaces can be assessed from the available access and which remain uncertain. A quotation should not imply that concealed timber or inaccessible areas have been fully inspected when they have not.

  • List included elevations and trim
  • Identify known problems and previous repairs
  • Record inaccessible areas and assumptions
  • Separate retained surfaces from repainted ones

What is preparation—and what is a repair?

Preparation and building repairs are not interchangeable. Ask what treatment is proposed for unstable paint, bare areas and minor surface defects, then establish whether any board replacement or other trade work is included. The coating manufacturer's instructions inform the preparation, but the inspected condition determines what must actually be done. Do not assume a general preparation allowance includes unlimited timber repairs.

What the Malvern photographs show

Colourway's Malvern garage-gable photographs show preparation already underway, with patches of exposed surface in the earlier cream coating and green louvres. The completed views show pale weatherboards with white louvres and trim. These are useful views of the visible change, not proof of an undisclosed coating system, repair quantity or project duration. The original project page retains both preparation-stage and completed images.

How should the coating system be described?

Ask for the proposed products and finishes against the included materials rather than accepting premium paint as the whole specification. Timber, adjacent masonry and metal details may need different treatment. The specification should account for existing coatings and bare or repaired areas. Confirm any product substitutions before work proceeds; the brand alone does not make two proposals equivalent.

What can change the scope after work starts?

Some conditions only become clear once access improves or unstable coatings are addressed. Ask how findings will be recorded and what approval is required before extra work. A useful variation identifies the location, proposed repair, responsibility and effect on the quotation or programme. This keeps discoveries visible without pretending an initial inspection can eliminate every uncertainty.

Prepare for your exterior assessment

Have a list of surfaces and exclusions ready, along with photographs and known repair history. Explain access restrictions and the dates you hope to work around. Do not disturb suspect old coatings or arrange high-level access yourself. Use the inspection to agree what will be priced, then compare written quotations on that same basis.

Frequently asked questions

Can weatherboards simply be painted over?

That depends on the condition of the existing coating and timber. The surface and proposed system need assessment; another coat should not be treated as a repair for an unresolved defect.

Are rotten-board repairs included?

Only where the written scope specifically includes the required work. Ask who will carry it out and how discoveries are approved.

Can I use the interior estimator for weatherboards?

No. The room-based estimator is for residential interiors. Exterior preparation and access need a site-specific assessment.
